 The Masonic Temple, in 1925, was destroyed by fire with damages estimated at $1 million.

1913 Portsmouth Flood, North Chillicothe Street

Note the 6th street Methodist church standing where now is the Mosaic Building.  The building beside it at one time housed Montgomery Ward and is now a parking lot. The Post office building front right was torn down and was replaced by Montgomery Ward building which is now 5th Third Bank.  Sears in 1913  is now The Emporium (also now closed).

Portsmouth Playhouse & Elks Club about 1921. Building at one time was the 6th street Methodist Church and present location of the Masonic building.

Portsmouth Grand Opera House

Portsmouth Grand Opera House and Hotel built in 1895. Gutted by fire in 1914 and never reopened. In 1916 the building was rebuilt and remodeled and was occupied by S. S. Kresgee's 5 & 10. It is now occupied by the Diamond Gem Pawn Shop

Grande Hotel, Portsmouth

Grand Hotel, 7th and Chillicothe Street. Portsmouth, Ohio. Later became the Lee Hotel owned by the Milner Chain and was popular with business men in the 50s and 60s.  North of it was the Gardner Theater. Kroger now occupies this site.

The Tower Post Office was built in 1888 and was torn down in the late 1950s.  Montgomery Wards was built there, then it became Security Central Bank, Then Bank One and is now occupied by Fifth Third Bank

Built in 1923, The Hurth Hotel was named for and owned by Adolph Hurth. Architect was C.C. Taylor.

Portsmouth Albert Zoellner clock

Albert Zoellner Jewelry Store & clock at Third & Chillicothe Streets.  The clock was erected Nov 10, 1910.  On the far left is the store owner posing with his staff. The Union Painless Dentist was located on the second floor. The Zoellner store was originally located on Second street where the first Zoellner clock was erected in 1867.

This picture was taken about 1963 showing 2nd and Chillicothe Street before urban renewal began. Smith Drug Store, the former Ramada Inn and there parking facilities replaced those buildings.
