Wheelersburg Creamery 1898

The Wheelersburg Creamery

The creamery was built in 1893 by a stock company of 43 farmers and business men of Porter Township and operated for about one year. After that year many of the stock holders became dissatisfied and the plant was sold to seven men who managed the concern for about one more year and was unable to return a profit.

I t was then leased to Charles Ach, a young man who had familiarized himself with the work of butter-making, and he began the work of bringing order to the somewhat chaotic condition of affairs.  He soon was rewarded and had a trade heat he was unable to supply, and made not only gilt-edged butter that commanded top-notch price, but an article that is produced from Jersey milk that yields the highest percentage of cream, by the standard Babcock test, of any similar institution in the United States.

When Mr. Ach started he was making 50 pounds of butter a day and with in a year and half he was making 175 pounds of butter per day. He sold the butter in Wheelersburg and  Portsmouth and shipped to Chillicothe, Ironton, Newport, KY; and Kenova, WV. In Portsmouth the butter was handled by Central Grocery Company and by George Brandau.

The capacity of the creamery in 1898 was 5,000 pounds a day, or 1,200 pounds per hour.
